Johnny Abegg is a former aspiring Pro Surfer turned filmmaker from Byron Bay, Australia.
Abegg gave away the competitive vest in 2005, after racking up a $27,000 debt pursuing his surfing dream worldwide. This was the foundation for his first film titled On Credit, and a passion for filmmaking.
In 2006 Johnny released Bay of the Dead, a Zombie/Surf film collaboration with buddy Jason Collins, leading into a more commercial position as Head of Production at Skuff TV. 2009 saw Abegg go against the grain with fellow filmmaker Matthew Yeates and create “___” , an untitled surf/party experimental film.
On the eve of Abegg’s 30th birthday, during a turbulent 2010, Johnny expanded beyond the surf genre to create Two Weeks, an internal account of a journey into manhood, filmed alone in the Tasmanian wilderness. In the same year Abegg started Common Ground, a community web portal which ignited a passion for photography.
Soon after, Abegg met the ‘love of his life’ Elizabeth Briedis, who co-runs fashion label Spell, and started creating fashion films, with campaigns with Spell, The Lane, Calleija Diamonds, CATGK and Mister Zimi.
The family relationship allowed Johnny to diversify into photography, having done numerous shoots for Spell, and collaborations with Hello May, Turquoise Lane and Conner Hats.
Acclaimed Melbourne Chef Ben Shewry saw something special in Abegg’s storytelling methods in 2011, sparking off a lasting friendship, and the production of a series of heartfelt and personal films.
Abegg’s filmmaking has diversified into arts and music, with ongoing projects for Splendour in the Grass and Falls Festival, music videos for musician MT WARNING, A stint creating the successful Corona ‘La Casa’ series, and arts initiatives in conjunction with DETACHED in Hobart, Tasmania.
More recently, Johnny has worked with claimed filmmaker Taylor Steele on a charity based film in Ethiopia, and a welcome return to Surf, with collaborations with Banks and O’Neill.
Johnny resides in Byron Bay with his wife Elizabeth, son Indiana and daughter Alushia.
